The Fruit Abides

Never have we experienced so much uncertainty…the health of our family and friends, the long-term health of our business, the way the world will look after Covid.

In the midst of all that we do not know comes the one thing that we can count on, the one thing that creates the foundation upon which our work and passion rests: there will be a harvest.

And we will be able to turn, for comfort, to the rhythms that – from August to November –  have governed our lives and those of every winemaker before us since before Time.

Cellar Ladders

View of The Lineage Collection Cellar.

As the 2020 harvest fast approaches, we are busy in the cellar making our first official evaluations of the 2019 wines. We devote about an hour a day making detailed notes on each barrel in a specific lot, thinking about where that particular barrel may ultimately end up.

The cellar is always full of changing mysteries, and this view of ladders and staircases (Escher-like) reminds us of the ups and downs of all artistic endeavors.

America’s Myth

I want to raise a glass to celebrate the birth of my country. America’s myth has always been greater, more inclusive, and stronger than its reality.

The myth would not resonate, as it still does, if there weren’t some grain of truth there. Here’s hoping that the next year will find the myth and the reality cleaved closer together.
